Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD has indicated that it is preparing to launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle in the Indian market. The company recently shared teasers on its official India website and social media channels, pointing towards the arrival of a model equipped with its Super DM-i hybrid technology.

The teasers were shared in May 2026 and suggest that the company is expanding its product strategy in India beyond battery-electric vehicles. BYD India shared the following messages on its official Instagram account:

“Super Intelligent Efficiently Electric. Beyond Hybrid. The future of driving is about to change — intelligently. The BYD DM-i Super Plug-In Hybrid EV Coming Soon.”

“Before intelligent mobility became a movement, BYD already BUILT it. 18 years of innovation. One Intelligent Technology Stay tuned!”

"Electric or Petrol? Range or Silence? Power or efficiency? What if you never had to choose? Eliminating the "OR" Stay Tuned for more!"

What is BYD Super DM-i Technology?

BYD's Super DM-i, or Dual Mode-intelligent, is a plug-in hybrid system that is designed to operate primarily in electric mode during regular driving conditions. Unlike conventional hybrid systems where the engine frequently powers the wheels, the Super DM-i setup uses the internal combustion engine mainly as a generator to produce electricity. The engine can also directly drive the wheels at higher speeds when it is considered more efficient to do so. The system is paired with BYD's Blade Battery technology and combines electric propulsion with a petrol engine to extend driving range.

V2L Functionality Expected

The upcoming hybrid vehicle is also expected to offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. This feature allows the vehicle's battery to supply power to external electrical devices, similar to the functionality available in several electric vehicles.

BYD's Position in India

BYD has been present in the Indian market since 2016 and currently sells electric vehicles across multiple segments. The planned introduction of a plug-in hybrid model would mark the company's entry into India's hybrid passenger vehicle segment.

While BYD has not yet disclosed the model name, specifications, pricing, or launch timeline, the teaser campaign confirms that a Super DM-i-based product is under development for the Indian market.

Elctrik Speaks

The introduction of a plug-in hybrid vehicle could allow BYD to address customers who want electric driving benefits but are still concerned about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel. As hybrid and range-extender technologies gain attention globally, BYD's Super DM-i system could add a new technology option to India's growing electrified vehicle market. Further details regarding the product are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
