VinFast has filed a design patent in India for the updated VF8 electric SUV, shortly after the model was unveiled in Vietnam. While a patent filing does not confirm a market launch, it provides legal protection for the vehicle’s exterior design in the country.
The filing has been made by VinFast's Indian subsidiary and suggests that the company is securing intellectual property rights for the SUV as it expands its presence in the Indian market.
Patent Images Reveal Design Changes
The patent images show the updated VF8 with a V-shaped LED light bar at the front, accompanied by segmented daytime running lights. Compared to the version showcased in Vietnam, the patent drawings also reveal a different alloy wheel design and a revised rear bumper. Apart from these changes, the overall styling remains similar to the model unveiled in VinFast’s home market.

VinFast VF8: Battery, Performance And Range
In Vietnam, the updated VF8 is available with a single electric motor producing 228 PS and 330 Nm of torque. The motor is paired with a 60.13 kWh battery pack.
According to VinFast, the SUV delivers a claimed driving range of up to 500 km under the NEDC testing cycle. The company also states that fast charging can take the battery from 10 percent to 70 percent in under 30 minutes.
These specifications are specific to the Vietnam-market model and could change if the vehicle is introduced in India.
Positioning In The Lineup
The VF8 measures approximately 4.7 metres in length, making it larger than the VF7, which is around 4.5 metres long. If introduced in India, the VF8 would sit above the VF6 and VF7 in VinFast’s local product portfolio.
At present, VinFast has not announced any launch timeline, pricing details, or production plans for the VF8 in India. The patent filing only indicates that the company has secured design protection for the vehicle in the country.
Elctrik Speaks
While a design patent filing does not confirm a product launch, it often indicates that a manufacturer is evaluating future opportunities in the market. Given that the VF8 would slot above the VF6 and VF7 in VinFast's India lineup, the SUV could help the company expand into a higher-priced segment if it decides to introduce the model locally. However, VinFast has not made any official announcement regarding the VF8's launch, specifications, or pricing for India.
