JSW Motors’ upcoming electric SUV based on the Chery iCaur V23 has been patented in India. The patent images show that the India-spec model will retain the overall shape of the iCaur V23 but will feature some changes to the exterior. The SUV is expected to be positioned as an electric off-road-focused model. According to information from sources, JSW Motors could introduce the SUV with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain in India.

JSW iCaur V23: Exterior design changes

The patent images show that the JSW Motors version retains the box-shaped design of the iCaur V23. It also gets circular LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, black exterior cladding, side steps and flared wheel arches.

The front grille has been redesigned for the India-spec model, while the front bumper appears to carry over from the international version. The side profile features a different alloy wheel design. A rectangular element can also be seen between the C- and D-pillars, which is not present on the international-spec iCaur V23.

The patent images also show a panoramic sunroof. The feature is not offered on the international version of the SUV. At the rear, the design appears to remain largely unchanged. The SUV continues with slim LED tail-lights and a storage box mounted on the tailgate.

JSW iCaur V23: Interior layout

The India-spec SUV is expected to retain most of the cabin layout of the iCaur V23. The international model uses a dashboard without a conventional instrument cluster. Instead, key driving information is displayed through the central 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The cabin also features a three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls and rotary controls positioned below the touchscreen for functions including drive modes, audio and climate settings. The iCaur V23 is available internationally with a five-seat layout and leatherette upholstery. JSW Motors could make changes to the upholstery and cabin colour scheme for the Indian market, while the basic dashboard layout is expected to remain similar.

JSW iCaur V23: Battery and powertrain options

The Chery iCaur V23 is sold internationally with two battery pack options measuring 59.93kWh and 81.76kWh. The smaller battery is paired with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 134hp and 180Nm. This version has an NEDC-claimed range of 360km.

The larger 81.76kWh battery is paired with a dual-motor AWD system. The setup produces 208hp and 292Nm, with an NEDC-claimed range of 430km. Sources suggest that JSW Motors could use the dual-motor AWD configuration for the Indian version.

Expected positioning in India

JSW Motors is expected to position the electric SUV in the off-road-focused electric SUV segment. The model could compete with vehicles such as the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha 5-door, although those models use internal combustion engines. The India-spec version is expected to be priced at around Rs 20 lakh.
