India's electric two-wheeler (e2W) segment registered retail sales of 8,01,277 units during the first five months of 2026, according to industry data. The figure represents a 49 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The segment has already achieved nearly 60 percent of the total electric two-wheeler sales recorded during the whole of 2025, when annual sales stood at approximately 13.4 lakh units. With monthly volumes consistently exceeding 1.6 lakh units, the category is positioned to reach close to 20 lakh units by the end of the year if current trends continue.

Market Share Continues to Expand

Electric two-wheelers accounted for 8.17 percent of India's total two-wheeler retail sales during the January-May 2026 period. This marks an increase from the 6 percent share recorded for the full year 2025.

The rise in market share reflects the growing presence of electric scooters and motorcycles across both urban and semi-urban markets. Industry observers also point to operating cost considerations and fuel price movements as factors influencing consumer adoption.

From Niche Segment to Mainstream Category

The growth of India's electric two-wheeler market over the past decade has been significant. In 2017, the segment recorded sales of just 1,516 units, accounting for a negligible share of the country's overall two-wheeler market.

Sales crossed the 1.6 lakh-unit mark for the first time in 2021, reaching 1,64,195 units. The following year saw a substantial increase, with volumes rising to 6,61,633 units as several manufacturers expanded their electric product portfolios and production capacity.

The market crossed the one-million annual sales milestone in 2024, recording approximately 12.1 lakh units. This was followed by further growth in 2025, when sales reached around 13.4 lakh units.

Electric Two-Wheelers Lead India's EV Volumes

Electric two-wheelers continue to represent the largest segment within India's electric vehicle market. Over the last decade, they have accounted for more than half of the country's EV sales, contributing significantly to overall electric mobility adoption.

Their relatively lower purchase cost compared to electric passenger vehicles, along with expanding charging infrastructure and increasing product availability, has supported wider adoption across different customer groups.

Elctrik Speaks

The first five months of 2026 indicate that electric two-wheelers remain the largest volume driver of India's EV market. While the segment's growth trajectory remains strong, sustaining momentum through the remainder of the year will depend on factors such as product availability, charging ecosystem expansion, financing accessibility, and policy stability. If current sales trends continue, 2026 could become the first year in which India's electric two-wheeler market approaches the 20 lakh annual sales milestone.
