The National Highways Authority of India instructed all FASTag issuer banks to validate Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) associated with FASTags. The move follows complaints where the registration number recorded by toll systems did not match the number displayed on vehicles.

Reason for Verification Drive

Authorities noted that incorrect VRN mapping can affect enforcement and may result in revenue leakage. Such discrepancies can also lead to penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Legacy FASTags Identified as Key Issue

A significant share of mismatches has been linked to FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN database. Earlier systems relied more on manual data entry, which may have led to inconsistencies in vehicle records.

Relevance for MLFF Tolling

Accurate vehicle identification is required for upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. Under this system, enforcement measures such as electronic notices will depend on verified vehicle data.

Action on Non-Compliant FASTags

Issuer banks have been directed to verify existing FASTags and blacklist those linked to incorrect or invalid vehicle registration numbers, as per government guidelines.
