BYD has indicated that it will launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in India on June 9, 2026. The company recently shared teasers through its official website and social media channels, confirming that the upcoming model will be equipped with its Super DM-i hybrid technology. The move would mark BYD's entry into the passenger vehicle hybrid segment in India, where the company currently sells only battery-electric vehicles.

What is BYD's Super DM-i System?

The Super DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) system is BYD's plug-in hybrid technology that combines an electric motor, battery pack and petrol engine.

In normal driving conditions, the vehicle primarily operates using electric power. The petrol engine is used to generate electricity when required and can also contribute to driving the wheels under specific operating conditions where it is considered more efficient.

The system is paired with BYD's Blade Battery technology and is designed to offer both electric driving capability and extended range through the petrol engine.

Vehicle-to-Load Functionality Expected

The upcoming model is also expected to support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. This feature allows power stored in the vehicle's battery to be used for external electrical devices through dedicated outlets.

V2L functionality has become increasingly common in electric and electrified vehicles globally and can be used to power appliances, electronic equipment and other devices.

Sealion 05 DM-i Could Be the Likely Model

While BYD has not officially revealed the model name, industry speculation points towards the Sealion 05 DM-i, which was recently introduced in China.

The Chinese-market model features BYD's latest plug-in hybrid system and is offered with several technology features, including advanced driver assistance systems. BYD claims a combined driving range of more than 2,100 km on a full fuel tank and battery charge under Chinese testing conditions.

The model is also available with features such as the DiPilot driver assistance platform, adaptive suspension technology and, in select variants, LiDAR-based driver assistance hardware.

Why the Launch Matters

The introduction of a plug-in hybrid vehicle comes at a time when consumers are evaluating multiple powertrain options, including internal combustion, hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrids offer the ability to drive short distances using electric power while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys. This approach can reduce dependence on public charging infrastructure while providing lower fuel consumption during daily commuting.

For manufacturers, the technology also serves as an additional pathway towards vehicle electrification in markets where charging networks continue to expand.

BYD's Presence in India

BYD has been operating in India since 2016 and currently offers electric passenger vehicles across different segments. The upcoming launch represents the company's first move into the plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle category in the country. The company has not yet disclosed pricing, variant details or full specifications of the model scheduled for launch.

Elctrik Speaks

BYD's decision to introduce a plug-in hybrid vehicle in India reflects the growing interest in alternative electrified powertrains beyond pure battery-electric vehicles. While EV adoption continues to increase, plug-in hybrids can appeal to buyers seeking electric driving capability without relying entirely on charging infrastructure. The upcoming launch will also provide an indication of how global manufacturers plan to position hybrid technologies alongside fully electric vehicles in the Indian market.
